V8-powered Toyota GR GT3 launched to replace Lexus RC F GT3

Toyota has taken the covers off the highly-anticipated GR GT3 car in Japan ahead of an expected debut “around 2027”.

Having first showcased the model at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, the first GT3 car to carry Toyota’s brand name was officially presented at the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center on Friday.

The Japanese manufacturer also unveiled two road cars, the GR GT and the all-electric Lexus LFA Concept, at the same event. Together, these three models represent the next flagships in Toyota’s line-up, following in the footsteps of the Toyota 2000GT and the Lexus LFA.

The Toyota GR GT3 is built around an all-aluminum frame and powered by an all-new four-litre, twin-turbo engine. Its road car derivative will also include a hybrid motor, with a maximum output of 650PS.

The GR GT3 has been developed with a ‘driver-first principle’ to allow both professionals and gentleman racers to get the best out of the machinery. The interiors have been designed to prioritise the driver's position and visibility “above all else”, according to the brand.

Toyota will continue to hone the GR GT3 for some time ahead of its slated competition debut “around 2027”. This essentially confirms that the Lexus RC F GT3 will race on for another year, having been in service since 2017.

Speaking to Motorsport.com in Bahrain, Toyota customer team ASP said it had no concerns about continuing with the current car in the World Endurance Championship, with series' rules prohibiting mid-season homologation changes.

Although the new model is badged as a Toyota, it remains possible that certain markets - notably the United States - could see the GR GT3 fielded under the Lexus name.

The unveiling of the GR GT3 follows a day after Toyota announced that it has strengthened its ties with the Haas Formula 1 team to become its official title partner from 2026. The squad will be known as the TGR Haas F1 team.

Haas drivers Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon sampled both the GR GT3 racer and its road-car derivative at Goodwood earlier this year.
