Mercedes releases 2026 F1 engine sound teaser ahead of regulation change

Following Honda's release last week, the Mercedes Formula 1 team has dropped a teaser for the sound of its 2026 power unit.

An audio clip, posted by the Brackley outfit, has been met with mixed reactions from fans after the 1.6-litre turbo V6 sound was shared online. Within hours of being posted, the clip had been seen over 200,000 times on X, with fans sharing their reactions.

One fan commented, "Better than turbo hybrid whine, but still dreaming of V10 screams... close enough?" while another added, "That’s better!"

"I really hope it drives better than it sounds," another fan commented, with someone else writing, "It seems like removing the MGU-H really did the V6 a very good favour."

"This is what championship sounds like btw [sic]," one wrote. Another added, "Please have mercy on us non-Mercedes fans. Take it easy and let's avoid another 2014."

2026 will bring in a new wave of regulations to the championship. One of the biggest changes will come to the power unit, with a 50/50 split in electric and engine power.

Mercedes will be supplying power units for three teams: McLaren, Williams and Alpine. While the regulation changes will reset the grid, Sky Sports strategy analyst Bernie Collins pointed to Mercedes' three customer teams as an advantage for the Toto Wolff-led team.

"I think the status quo will change among the teams because I think it'll be who gets the engine right and who gets the engine wrong," Collins explained during the Sky Sports F1 Show.

"I think the perception is that Mercedes engine teams will rise to the top. But we don't know. We've not compared them against each other.

"But if nothing else, they've got three teams who they are supplying, so they're going to learn a lot faster than Honda, which is only supplying one team."
