Emerald Fennell is no stranger to desire in its darkest forms, and in 2026, she’s reinvigorating a classic tragedy. After Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, the Oscar-winning filmmaker is turning her lens to the Yorkshire moors with a lavish new adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the film, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as the doomed lovers Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Fennell writes, directs, and produces the project, reimagining Emily Brontë’s 1847 classic for a modern audience—one drawn to her particular brand of beautiful unease.

The teasers so far hint at a visceral, sensual reworking of the Gothic text. And with Charli XCX composing an original album to accompany the film, Wuthering Heights looks set to become 2026’s most intoxicating cinematic event.

Is Emerald Fennell adapting Wuthering Heights?

Emerald Fennell announced she will bring Wuthering Heights to the silver screen on July 13. She subsequently changed her X (formerly Twitter) bio to the book’s title and updated her banner to the artwork featured alongside the announcement.

Designed by artist Katie Buckley, the fine-line illustration features a deconstructed skeleton that appears to be brewing a potion. Heathcliff’s dark plea for love from the two-volume book also appears, reading: “Be with me always—take any form—drive me mad!”

What is Wuthering Heights about?

Fennell’s adaptation of Brontë’s only novel centres on the violent, passionate relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, an orphan taken in by her family.

Set amid the untamed British countryside, the story explores obsession, revenge, and the social hierarchies that shape their doomed love.

Spanning generations, Wuthering Heights captures how desire can both elevate and destroy—a theme perfectly suited to Fennell’s taste for emotional volatility and psychological intensity.

Who is cast in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights?

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are our modern Cathryn and Heathcliff. The two, who recently starred in a Chanel No. 5 campaign together, are already making headlines from the BTS glimpses we’ve seen.

The cast also features Hong Chau as Nelly Dean, Alison Oliver as Isabella Linton, and Shazad Latif as Edgar Linton, with rising newcomers Owen Cooper, Charlotte Mellington, and Vy Nguyen playing the younger versions of Heathcliff, Catherine, and Nelly.

Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is producing, with Elordi describing the film as “electric… like nails on a chalkboard. It moves you in some kind of way.”

Given the expansive nature of the book, it’s unclear if Fennell will be faithful to the original material and re-tell their exhaustive three-decade romance, or focus on a particular fragment of the novel.

When will Wuthering Heights be released?

Filming began in early 2025 across the English countryside, with first-look photos revealing Robbie in a sweeping, off-the-shoulder wedding gown.

The official poster, unveiled in September 2025, confirmed a Valentine’s Day 2026 release—an apt date for a story defined by its agonising portrayal of love.
