MFW: It's All Eyes On The Skirt At Prada Spring/Summer 2027

No brand’s history of skirts fills our moodboards—and eBay searches—as much as Prada. From timeless graphic prints to the perfect A-line silhouettes, their masterful iterations are as fun as they are functional. So it’s only natural that for Spring/Summer 2027, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons narrowed their focus to this single, seemingly straightforward garment, then probed just how many different lives it might have. The answer? Quite a few.

“The skirt” became both muse and canvas: a fixed silhouette that proved ripe for play. Familiar Prada ideas of questioning purpose and utility were twisted into something more decorative, with contrasting Velcro becoming the foundation for crystal embroidery, oversized metal fasteners all jewelled up, and crinoline eluding its supporting role to become a visible, almost protective layer.

The collection was full of these sleights of hand. Industrial fabrics such as matte cire and Re-Nylon were transformed into pleats, cotton was made to resemble leather or suede, and crystal skirts even mimicked guipure lace. Elsewhere, a pleated skirt expanded away from the body, held ever so loosely in the hand, its shape shifting with movement. Layers both revealed and concealed with tactical cuts, while the skirt changed character depending on what it was worn with: a sweater, shirt, or bra top could completely alter its reading.

There was something satisfyingly Prada about the whole exercise—and not just because Miuccia’s personal style is synonymous with a good knee-length skirt. Rather than chasing novelty or remixing the looks that have kept them at the top of their game, the collection found its intrigue in examining something we already know with a fresh perspective.

The result was a collection that felt both rigorous and playful, proving that even the most recognisable wardrobe staple can still surprise us. Sometimes fashion’s most interesting questions can begin with the simplest objects.
